Free Money

For this blog, I decided to go to the Oaks Mall and give out the $1.00 bills. I decided that the food court would be a good place to start, so I started by the entrance right before you go into the food court. I approached people that were passing by and preferably alone. To start the conversation with people to take the $1.00 bill I approached them and said, “hope you have a great day, here’s one dollar.” Before giving out the one-dollar bills, I thought I was going to be able to give away, at least, three of the dollar bills. Doing the experiment, I was only able to give away two of the five-dollar bills.

After completing this exercise, I was surprised that I was only able to give away two of the five-dollar bills. The people that took the one-dollar bill were surprised but overall happy that it was free money. This exercise was harder than I expected it to be. My predictions were incorrect because in my opinion people do not trust strangers and do not know why they are giving away free money that causes them to reject the offer. Other reasons could be because they feel like they make more money or are well off to just take money from a stranger. I did not think the people that I would offer the one-dollar bill would get offended by it but some did. I approached them with a welcoming gesture and my intention was not to offend them. Overall, I am glad it is over with mainly because even though it was an assignment I got a weird feeling getting rejected.

  1. Hi! I loved that you went to a place with a wider amount of various people, versus students on campus. This way, you were able to test out different types of people with different demographics. I wish I were able to hear you in the video to explain why you wanted to give strangers a dollar. Overall, I loved how genuine all your videos were.

  2. Hi Daniela!
I give you props for going to an area with such high traffic and different types of people to give out your dollars! It is definitely harder than it looks. It's sad, but I can believe why people wouldn't take your dollar in this kind of environment. Sometimes a lot of people feel harassed at the mall (for example the lotion kiosks) and they probably thought that you wanted to engage them in buying a product or something if they accepted your dollar. It really is a shame that people can't believe someone would just want to be doing something nice for someone! My approach was a lot different than yours, check it out if you get the chance! http://jenniecarmody.blogspot.com/2016/02/free-money.html

  3. You mentioned how some people were offended and you thought that maybe they felt that they were too well off to accept/need your free money, and I noticed that as well, specifically in you video "Free Money 3." It's interesting that so many people seemed confused and somewhat frightened as to why you'd be doing this. I think that this says a lot about the world we live in, and makes me wonder if it's just the U.S., or all nations, that would have this same reaction of distrust. Also, I admire your courage to approach the security officer, I'd be too scared, after previous reactions of fear, that she would get the wrong idea and getting into possible trouble. Anyways, great job with the experiment! Check out my blog at

  4. Hey Daniela, I really enjoyed watching your video and the reactions of those people were priceless. Those reactions were genuine unlike a lot of other post I saw where you can clearly see they knew the people from before. I didn’t get a chance to do my post because I’m shy and I didn’t have someone to record it for me so it would’ve been an awkward encounter. Check out my blog though:
